Following basic training, service members are given assignments based on Service needs, and their skills and training. As such, there are no guarantees a member will serve close to home.

Base Locators Every military base has a “base locator.” You can usually locate the military member you’re looking for with a simple phone call. To contact the base locator, call long distance information, and ask them to connect you to the base operator for the military base where the member is stationed.
How long are military away from home?
Generally, deployment means a scheduled time away from the normal duty station, usually outside of the United States. It may mean seven months on a Navy ship, 12 months at a forward operating base or three months in a town with restaurants and shops you’d recognize back home.
Can you choose where you are stationed in the military?
Generally speaking, in the Army, when you enlist you can pick your job or you can pick your duty station, but not both. It depends on what your priorities are. This doesn’t precisely mean you will get your chosen spot: What it does mean is that you can leave the Army if they don’t follow through with the contract.

There are two terms used by the military to define your state of residence: Home of Record. Your home of record is the state recorded by the military as your home when you were enlisted, appointed, commissioned, inducted, or ordered in a tour of active duty.

Military spouses do not have a home of record. A state of legal residence, or domicile, or legal domicile, is the place where the service member thinks of as home, the state where you intend to live after you leave the military. Your state of legal residence may change throughout your life.
Where do you live when you are in the military?
Home of Record is the place one was living when they entered the military. Legal Residence is where they vote, pay taxes, and register vehicles.
Can a military spouse retain their state of legal residence?
In 2009, the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act (MSRRA) became law, and it gives military spouses the right to retain their state of legal residence as long as it is the same state as their active duty spouse and as long as the spouse is living with the active duty member as the direct result of military orders.
