What is dependent student status?

Dependency status refers to whether a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) applicant is dependent or independent. This will determine whose information you include on the FAFSA. If you’re a dependent student, you will report your and your parents’ information.

Is a student classed as a Dependant?

Generally, you’ll be classed as a dependent student if you’re under 25 on the first day of the academic year for which you’re applying for support and are financially dependent on one or both of your parents (even if you don’t live with them).

How long can you be a dependent student?

If your child is a full-time college student, you can claim them as a dependent until they are 24. If they are working while in school, you must still provide more than half of their financial support to claim them.
