Abstract. Swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) was introduced in clinical practice in 2012. Because of its deeper penetration and faster acquisition time, SS-OCT has the ability to visualize choroid, vitreous, and retinal structures behind dense preretinal hemorrhages.

Swept-source OCT (SS-OCT; DRI-OCT, Topcon Japan) is the latest milestone in retinal and choroidal imaging. Simultaneous high-quality visualization of the vitreous, retina, and choroid is possible. Choroidal layers that are hardly distinguishable in conventional SD-OCT become visible.

How does swept source OCT work?

The swept-source light source has a wavelength centered at ~1 µm that sweeps across a narrow band of wavelengths, while spectral-domain devices utilize a broadband light source. The laser frequency sweep labels different time delays, which are then detected by interference.
